From Software To Substrate

During the Golden Age of penmanship from 1860 to 1930, masters and teachers of this art recognized that before one can effectively put pen to paper, they must first learn to properly put hand to pen.

Defense Wins Championships

Defense Wins Championships

New article from Marshall Atkinson at atkinsontshirt.com. Did you see Cam and Peyton blister the field in Super Bowl 50 with their brand of high octane offense?  Of course not.  Because that’s not what happened, despite what the sports journalists predicted in the crushing hype leading up to the game.
I wonder why nobody takes into consideration that other people are on the field giving their all too?  It’s their job to stop them.  From a former defensive tackle (I was the slow guy that tried hard in high school), I thought it was a great performance.  It certainly wasn’t what the talking heads predicted.
After the Broncos won the game Von Miller, their star linebacker, was named the Most Valuable Player.  Rightfully so…but that trophy really should have gone to the rest of his defensive teammates too.  (Except for maybe Aqib Talib for that asinineintentional facemask on Corey Brown)
So around the world Denver Broncos fans are celebrating, Carolina Panther fans are saying “wait until next year” in the surrender cobra pose, and everyone else is just either talking about how dumb the halftime show was or the disappointment in the commercials this year.  My eleven year old son is trying to weasel out of doing the dishes three times in one week, as he lost his bet by backing Cam.  This old guy took the old guy.

The 12 Essential Terms for Automatic Press Calibration

Ink transfer is most often described as interface, variable, center pressure, pressure differential, and fluid pressure drop, but even so, these precise quantities are inconspicuous. Here are 12 terms to keep in mind when dialing in automatic press calibration.

The Death of Customer Service in the Decorated Apparel Industry

The Death of Customer Service in the Decorated Apparel Industry

New article from Marshall Atkinson at atkinsontshirt.com. I’ve been thinking a lot about customer service lately.   Mostly with our supply chain. Maybe my article title is a bit dramatic, but I want to make a point.  There are superstars in this business, there are folks that are ok most of the time, and then there are those that just leave you shaking your head and mumbling to yourself.
I wrote another article about this topic, but I’m not going to publish it.  That article was about a few suppliers who have in the past two weeks udderly amazed me with their lack of customer service.  So luckily for you, I’m not using that one.  It is the written equivalent of a Yosemite Sam tirade.  “%#@*&@!%” at it’s cartoon best.
Nope, instead let’s explore the beating heart of customer service and what makes up the basic core expectations of that idea in the modern world.  Think about these below and use them for some basis to grade your suppliers.  How would they rate?  If you are a decorated apparel supplier, use this as a self-assessment.  Not trying to bitch and moan, but improvement on the supplier horizon would be a good thing.

Metaphorical Blinders Halt Forward Progress*

Metaphorical Blinders Halt Forward Progress*

New post from Marshall Atkinson at Atkinsontshirt.com. Lately around our shop we have been incredibly focused.  So focused in fact, that I think we’ve missed some obvious things we could have handled better.  Nothing major, but we all want to be tweaking whatever isn’t working quite right so it can be improved.  Right?
However that doesn’t happen when you are just focused on one thing.  Getting that order out.  Setting up that big ten color job because you have a client coming in for a press check in thirty minutes.  Sewing that expensive Patagonia jacket.  Perfecting that color match for a digital print.  Shipping those three skids of backpacks to the other side of the planet.  Even starting that new employee on their first day.
We do these things and they go off without a hitch.  Because we are putting the time and energy into them to make sure that the results are what we expect.
The issue though that I’m writing about today, is not catching the small problems that are occurring as we are walking by on our way to make these “important” challenges work out correctly.

Can I pretreat by hand, or do I need to use a pretreatment machine?

Can I pretreat by hand, or do I need to use a pretreatment machine?

You can pretreat by hand, but the variability of manually pretreating can cause issues. One issue is that you really do not know how much pretreatment you are applying to the shirt, which is one of the most important aspects of properly pretreating—specific amounts of pretreatment are required to get “the perfect print.”
